Day 15 – 1 John 3: 1-7
The writer sets the context for our passage at the end of the previous chapter when He says that we need to be ready at all times doing the things of Jesus and being like Him. In this way the world will come to know Him as they see us reflecting His nature and purposes in the world. Our readiness is not one practising for a set time, or place inspection, but making the focus of our lives being like Him.
In recent years many have tried to follow the idea of “What Would Jesus Do?” (WWJD) as a way of focusing on being like Jesus. My own problem with this is that I’m pretty good at justifying my preferred course of action as being something that fits the mantra. This can lead me into the kinds of partisan, selfish, or arrogant behaviours which Jesus often criticised, although I’m too invested in them to realise – but others see. Rather, I prefer to practise “How Would Jesus Do It?” and I find I’m on much safer ground. Act with love, in humility, with selflessness, practising justice, showing mercy, accepting all and I begin to see how my behaviour can better reflect Jesus to those around me.
Who most impressed you as you were nurtured in faith? What impressed you most of all about them? For me it was those who demonstrated the Christ in them through their approach to life, its challenges and opportunities. They were loving and kind but also tough when it came to challenging wrongs and championing others. If we do the things of Jesus in His way as we go about our work and our lives in the community then others will notice and want to know more about this most important relationship in our lives.
Lord, in all I do today give me the grace and courage to speak Your words and be like You in every situation. Amen.
