Day 22 – Acts 4: 5-26

“I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it out in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with light.” John Keith Falconer.

As Christians we are called to make a difference. The “life of mission” is the life that God desires of every Christian. The power of our Christian influence should be undeniable, unmistakable and inescapable. Like yeast, we are called to permeate the dough; like salt, we bring flavour and taste to life; like light, we bring hope into darkness.

In the reading today, we hear of two simple fishermen having an encounter with the religious authorities of the day. The Pharisees’ opinion of Peter and John was that they were “unlearned and ignorant men.” Imagine their surprise at the bold, courageous and confident response from these followers of Jesus.

In many ways Peter and John were unlikely followers of Christ. They were not religious leaders; they were not highly educated or influential men, yet these were the very men who helped change the world. What made the difference? We are told, “They had been with Jesus.” And this is the key – our relationship with Him. We can’t truly encounter Jesus and not be changed!

Wouldn’t you like to be that kind of person – known as one who has been with Jesus? Have you made the wonderful discovery of knowing Jesus Christ personally? If you haven’t, now is the time to do so. If you have, now is the time to whole-heartedly commit to Him.

The Christ who used these disciples is the same Christ who is ready and willing to use us if we make ourselves available to Him. He wants us to be the difference that makes the difference.

Sovereign Lord, as You gave courage and confidence to Your first disciples, empower me to be an influence for You. Amen.
